97th Legislative Session, Week 1 Wrap-Up

The 97th Legislative Session started Tuesday, January 11, 2022, with Governor Noem delivering her State of the State address to the South Dakota Legislature. As Governor Noem spoke to lawmakers, she clarified what she thought were some of the most significant issues South Dakota is facing and will face in the new year.

Governor Noem declared that South Dakota is in great shape heading into 2022, stating that "South Dakota is stronger than it has ever been in our 133-year history."

Chief Justice Steven R. Jensen delivered his State of the Judiciary

Tribal Chair Delbert Hopkins Jr. delivered the State of the Tribes

Governor Noem announced that she is bringing several bills for consideration this year on topics including abortion, medical or religious exemption from COVID vaccines, and fairness in women's sports.

In addition to the Governor's bills, lawmakers have filed legislation dealing with abortion rights, legalizing marijuana, various social issues, and uses for nearly one billion dollars in federal Coronavirus relief funds. Lawmakers will also decide whether to hold an impeachment vote against Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg.
